English As ligands for the nuclear receptor FXR, bile acids regulate their own synthesis, transport, and conjugation, thus protecting against bile acid toxicity. Recently, the role of genetic variants in FXR itself, FXR target genes, and regulators of FXR in the pathophysiology of the liver and intestine has become increasingly evident.
