English Mobile applications make second language learning more accessible to a large part of the population. The wide use of mobile applications to learn a new language is a great opportunity for researchers to explore in an ecological context the mechanisms that support second language learning. We took this opportunity to explore the cognitive mechanisms supporting second language vocabulary learning in adults using a learning application. French-speaking adults were assigned to one of two learning schedules (distributed or massed) and learned Finnish vocabulary over a two-week period using a mobile application. Memory performance for translations was assessed before and after the intervention, as well as performance on other cognitive tasks, including working memory, rhythm production, vocabulary size, nonverbal intelligence, and sustained attention. The role of working memory, rhythm processing, and the effect of different learning schedules on second language vocabulary learning will be discussed.
