English Adsorption of maleic acid onto the copper(110) surface in ultrahigh vacuum induces restructuring of the surface such that its original mirror symmetry is locally broken. Scanning tunnelling microscopy performed on areas, which contain no molecules after annealing, reveals that Cu adatoms are still lined up on the surface in a chiral fashion.
