English We live in a digital world where it is now possible to learn the basics of a second language using something as simple as a mobile application. Despite the presence of several applications dedicated to language learning on the market, the effectiveness of the use of these applications, as well as the learning principles on which they are based, remain to be evaluated. To this end, we conducted an online experiment where French-speaking adults learned Finnish words over a two-week period using a mobile application developed specifically for the study. The application manipulated different learning principles such as presentation modality, type of feedback, frequency and type of retrieval practice, and direction of language learning. The results are discussed in light of the literature on learning principles and are aimed to guide the development of future language learning applications.
