English Indigenous communities in Guatemala have long suffered from discrimination and neglect, but sustainable tourism could help empower these communities while preserving their cultural heritage. The Tz'utujil indigenous Maya culture and Lake Atitlán are particularly threatened in the highlands of the country, and responsible tourism initiatives could be used to counter this. To revitalize Tz'utujil culture and preserve Lake Atitlán, the indigenous-led grass-roots organization CIE Taa' Pi't prioritizes the contemporary applications of ancient Mayan knowledge, practices, and traditions in its programs. This organization is considering the possibility to offer tourism services that preserve cultural heritage, while creating the opportunity to become self-sustaining. This thesis presents recommendations for culturally appropriate and environmentally sustainable tourism services for CIE Taa’ Pi’t. Ultimately, the goal would be to create culturally sustainable tourism opportunities that safeguard the region’s rich but fragile cultural and environmental heritage which could move them to self-sustainability.
