English DNA-organized multi-chromophoric systems containing phenanthrene and pyrene derivatives exhibit a highly efficient excitation energy transfer from phenanthrene (donor) to pyrene (acceptor). The energy transfer also occurs if the phenanthrene antenna is interrupted by intervening DNA base pairs. Artificial light-harvesting complexes composed of up to five phenanthrene-DNA alternations with fluorescence quantum yields as high as 68% are described.
