English Over the course of the past few decades, the professional world has been subject to
many changes. Globalization and digitalization have changed the nature of work and
strengthened the interconnections and competition around the globe. Organizations and
their employees are constantly under pressure to adapt and perform to satisfy the
increasingly demanding requirements of society. As a result, many employees are
stressed and exhausted, leading to negative effects on their physical and mental health.
Such illnesses have a significant cost to society, both socially and financially.
Organizations’ ability to adapt and prosper in the face of adversity, also called resilience,
has never been more crucial.
This research paper addresses the question of whether high resilience levels lead to high
performance for young professionals of Western Switzerland and whether resilience can
be developed by everyone. How could resilience enable young professionals to better
manage their stress and thereby enhance their performance in their first years in the
professional world?
The primary data collected mainly through a survey and interviews with resilience
specialist practitioners, trainers and coaches and a Human Resources manager was
aimed at gaining insights into the current state of young professionals and resilience in
Western Switzerland.
The results demonstrated that there was a positive relationship between resilience level
and the three types of performance namely, task, contextual and adaptive performance
for young professionals of Western Switzerland as well as the possibilities for resilience
development for individuals.
The recommendations arising from the conclusions drawn are based on the fact that
young professionals of Western Switzerland do experience stress, which could refrain
performance optimization, and aim at providing recommendations to educational
institutions of Western Switzerland on how they could help their students become more
resilient and to companies in Western Switzerland to allow them to enhance their young
professionals’ performance by fostering resilience from within. Recommendations
include the implementation of resilience assessment and training in educational
institutions as well as organizations, the incorporation of resilience in the regular
educational cursus and creating an organizational culture that foster resilience.
