Bachelor of Science HES-SO (BSc) en Tourisme: Haute Ecole de Gestion Valais, 2022

English This thesis elaborated on the definition and the best practice of slow tourism and the potential of Ecuador for being a slow tourism destination. Slow tourism has gained relevancy and popularity since it identifies with the new tourist perception and preferences. However, as a generic definition of slow tourism was absent, the study’s outcome suggested slow tourism to be a conscious, highly interactive, and sustainable tourism praxis. Moreover, its experiences were characterised by high-quality, cultural and natural tendencies. Further, there was an absence of a best practice of slow tourism to be implementable for tourism destinations. Consequently, this inductive study examined Perú, Japan, Latvia, Madeira (Portugal), and Morges (Switzerland). The latter was conducted with a benchmark approach and acknowledged through experts’ semi-structured interviews and secondary literature. Furthermore, the paper discussed the potential of Ecuador being a slow tourism destination deriving from the benchmark of the five slow tourism destinations. As its main contribution, the study highlighted the best practices of slow tourism: diversity, infrastructure and transportation variety, mutual interaction between tourists and the local population, locality, slow transportation, and highquality experience. Given the parameters utilized for the benchmark, the study created a basis that assured continuity for further research and practical applications for tourism destinations or agencies. Ultimately, the paper contributed to the theory regarding slow tourism’s definition and slow tourism in Ecuador. Hence, findings presupposed that Ecuador possessed optimal conditions for being a slow tourism destination, yet adjustments, time, and effort were still necessary to implement slow tourism at its best.
