English This thesis explores the possibility of how outpatient waiting rooms could transform from so-called non-places to environments that prioritize both the mental and physical well-being of their patients. Many hospitals, most of which were built in the post-war era, were designed for efficiency only, resembling machines or factories, neglecting the human scale and patient centric design. As a consequence, waiting rooms have become poorly standardized spaces, failing to serve the patients’ needs. This paper addresses the paradoxical exclusion of waiting areas from the concept of (medical) care, which stands in contrast to all other spaces within an outpatient clinic waiting room. Patients usually go through emotionally charged moments in crammed spaces, where the interior architecture often negatively impacts the patient’s well-being, and thus their satisfaction. This thesis proposes solutions to improving the design of waiting areas, while it advocates that various essential factors be considered, such as public zones versus more private ones in order for the patient to retreat from others, views and the relationship to the (natural) environment, lighting, surface materials and colors. While it should be self-evident that waiting rooms should be tailored to diverse health conditions, alongside serving functional requirements like infection control and workflows, this paper calls for a reimagined outpatient waiting room that fosters a holistic approach to patient (health) care.
